Big Hole National Battlefield
River from the Nez Perce camp, looking northwest. A view of the Nez Perce encampment area shows willow thickets huddled along the river bank. The Nez Perce camped along the river bottom, where they incorporated willows into practical and recreational uses such as rope-making and children's games. The willows played a role in determining the battle outcome in August of 1877. The dense thicket provided both concealment and entrapment, and deaths on both sides are partially attributed to the willows.
