Frances (Appleton) Longfellow to Thomas Gold Appleton, 1 March 1845
Manuscript letter
Boston. March 1st 1845.
Dearest Tom,
Your long-desired & despaired of letters have gladdened our eyes at last, having been committed to lazy packets. It is lucky they are not all at the bottom of the sea, so many ships are missing and lost. I suppose you heard of poor Bryants misfortunes – many persons suffered at the same time, the Sears in diamonds, & Aunt Sam again in carpets.
Your accounts of your artist life in Rome are very charming, and it makes me very happy to know you are occupied after your own heart so entirely. With such facilities at your elbow it must be delicious to allow your natural taste to flow forth unchecked. That any one can be an artist here is a miracle to me, and I doubt if Allston could have accomplished it if he had not steeped his soul in an Italian atmosphere which never left it bare & exposed to the pityless blasts & cold skies of this prosaic climate. He carried an Italy ever within him
[p. 4 bottom] great the last few years. I wish you could get me a drawing of the figure of Christ in the Transfiguration like Mr Grays. I am writing at the last moment in full gallop or I would say much more. The Inglises are happy in good news from Alick. He & his little charge are safe in Havana after being almost wrecked on the way. Stengy has made a very good miniature of Father, He has greatly improved in colour & firmness of drawing.
[p. 4 top] Our busts have safely arrived – the grand Jove & the [torn off] poet heads all in good order. Wishing you every happiness darling, with every body’s kind remembrance
ever thy loving
Fannikin
Em promises to write next time, having nothing to say at present. No paté has appeared – tho she ship is in.
