Dear Colonel Sanders:
Thank you for your letter of June 7, 1966, concerning Indiana memorials in this Park. The Gettysburg National Cemetery and the Park are administered as a single unit today and the rules of the Park relating to the monumentation apply to both.
There are approximately eighty Civil War soldiers buried in the Indiana Civil War plot in the National Cemetery, although there are no Indiana memorials, as such, located there. However, each of the six Indiana regiments which fought at Gettysburg (7th, 14th, 19th, 20th, 27th Infantry and 3rd Cavalry) has a memorial located at the principal position occupied during the battle. It is our understanding that these memorials were erected with funds provided by a State appropriation on March 5, 1885.
You may have in mind a “State Memorial” dedicated to all the armed forces of Indiana at Gettysburg. There has been a trend in recent years to limit the memorialization to a single state monument. The Confederate States, who were late in erecting memorials, have followed this trend and we have such representation from Virginia, North Carolina, Alabama, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Texas, and Arkansas. Three states of the Union, however, have State Memorials in addition to lesser ones. They are New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.
There are no limitations on the size and cost of memorials. Their design, site and inscription, however, must be approved by the Director of the National Park Service.
If we can be of further help, please let us know.
Sincerely yours,
George F. Emery
Superintendent
