Two adjacent smokes from lightning strikes were discovered by park helicopter on July 22, 2005, in the large wilderness area north of Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon National Park. Because of remoteness of location and desireability of fire for resource benefit, the fires were categorized as wildland fire use. Within 24 hours the two fires had joined together and were put under the jurisdiction of several fire use teams. The fire continued to burn throughout the summer and fall with a total of 8,675 acres burned in Kings Canyon NP and approximately 1000 acres burned in the adjacent Sequoia National Forest.
