Margaret James Murray Washington to Alice Mary Longfellow, 30 March 1898
Manuscript letter
[printed letterhead: Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute]
Tuskegee, Ala., March 30th 98
Dear Miss Longfellow,
Accompanying this letter of mine is one from John Richard Freeman. He has been under our care for some time and we feel that in helping him secure an education you are helping others for we try to teach our young people that in as much as they receive they must give. Our boys and girls are for the most part earnest, They work hard and are learning the lesson of economy, But work as hard as they may they can not make sufficient money to remain in school and at same time support themselves. I want to thank you personally for your interest in us.
[p. 2] We shall not disappoint our friends there in the North. They have stood by nobly and no word of ours can make them understand how much we appreciate their kindness. Indeed if it were not for you then we should have fallen by the way ere this.
Our work has been very pleasant this year. This does not mean that this has not been a hard one. Our rooms are all filled with students but our barns are not all filled with corn but somehow we shall pull through.
This boy tells his own story better than I so I send his letter.
You will please accept thanks from both Mr. Washington and myself for your continued interest.
Yours Very Truly
Mrs. Booker T. Washington
