Lighting at Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in January 2008
Begun in 1672, the citadel at St. Augustine, Florida (named after Saint Mark the Evangelist) is the oldest masonry fortification in the continental United States. For a time after the U.S. took possession, the citadel was renamed "Fort Marion." The current lighting system is primarily for security. The lighting is routinely vandalized and occasionally damaged by salt water (the moat occasionally floods in storms).
