Dear Brother Richard
it is now Second day evening and I have not had time to write to thee yet, we recieved thy letter last fourth day, saying that thee got a fall on the ice and was Sick two days. we were very sorry to hear this but hope thee will soon get well, and not get another such, I just got through studying my grammar lesson, how I do dislike it – does thee not? Mary is writing to Ben, they keep up quite a correspondence does not thee think I am too bad for I never have written to Ben yet Mary received a letter from Aunt Catharine this Afternoon she said they had not heard from thee in a great while, but I suppose thee is not well enough to write anybody yet Little George is playing in the coach by Ma he is very mischievious. I wish thee could see him There was a funny Dress party at Mr Williams last fourth day evening. Cousins Sarah Julia & Charley went. Charley represented Jonathan Green he had a forlorn hat made in the year 1827 a Coat borrowed with great brass buttons on, pantaloons with leather straps to walk on, a very short vest and the best of all was a pocket handkerchief with a map of the United States on. when he went in he said, “pretty smart of folks here I guess I will hand up some of my maps” when any body asked him where he came from he would pull it out and point to maine, and say “way down east” Sarah was a Squaw she had a black dress trimmed round the bottom with a great wide piece of red muslin with great tin buttons first one square and then one round all up her dress, earrings of tin about as big as a good sized apple pantaloons black trimmed with red flannel and all kind of tinsel, she had a pretty pair of moccassins, her hair was braided in one strand. Julia was a peasant girl dressed in a black silk waist low neck white skirt & white bishops sleeves. she had Jennies flat trimmed with blue ribbon her hair was platted in seven and tied with pink she looked real pretty. Rebeca Mumford was a Quakeress she had one of Aunt Mary Ann’s dresses on and a cap. I forgot to tell thee Thomas Mumford was in town, I must close so good bye
from thy Affectionate sister
Sarah
P.S. Please excuse bad writing and short letter for it is bed time, is thee out of stamps Father Mother Aunts Lydia and Hannah & Willie went to Clyde last Seventh morning and returned in the evening all send thier love so good bye again."
“My dear Richard
It is too bad that any blank paper should be sent as I know full well the least thing home will interest Thee – we were sorry to hear Thee had been confined to the bed for the effects of a Fall. they prove very serious sometimes and I do hope thee has entirely recovered in this try to be more careful in future Cousin Julie had been quite sick they were very uneasy about her yesterday I was there to day and found her much better Aunt M was there She seems very dull she has pretty much given up all hope of seeing Wilson very soon. They have sold poor old Tom for thirty dollars I think will miss him very much. Abbeys have not gone to California yet I doubt their going very soon Do excuse this miserable scrawl my pen is forlorn Father joins me in love Affection
Mother”
