A red squirrel sits on a tree branch holding a piece of walnut.
When identifying tree squirrels, look closely at their tail, eyes, and fur color. There are gray, fox, red, and even flying squirrels in Cuyahoga Valley. When identifying red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris), the key traits are their uniformly reddish fur, bushy tails, small body size, and white eye rings. These squirrels are commonly found near mature conifers. They store conifer cones in large piles called “middens,” instead of burying their food underground.
