The land on which the Cant Ranch was built was first homesteaded by Floyd Officer, a member of one of the first families to settle in the John Day River Valley. When they were ready to set up their own operation, the Cants purchased the Officer Homestead and moved into the log house on the property with their first-born, James Cant, Jr. Over the next six decades, the Cant operation expanded ten-fold.
