Dear Mr. DeMoss:
We are in the process of checking the information furnished with your letter of February 9. We are finding it very difficult to verify the proposed statement that Indiana “... sustained the first casualty and the first death among the Union ranks in the Battle of Gettysburg.”
We also question the inclusion of the 21st Infantry. This regiment, which was the 1st Regiment Heavy Artillery, was not at Gettysburg according to the records we have searched.
There is also a question on the designation of the two companies of the 1st Cavalry. The record indicates them to be Companies I and K, not J and K.
If you desire, we could submit a revision of the proposed monument text for consideration by your committee.
Sincerely yours,
George F. Emery
Superintendent
