Horned lark (Eremophila alpestri), Arches National Park, 2014.
This is a bird of open ground. Look carefully at bare, brown fields - especially in winter - and parts of the brown ground may appear to be moving. In fact, a horned lark's body blends well with the ground but as it turns around you'll see its striking yellow face with black mask and tiny black 'horns' on its head, from which its name is derived. For horned larks, the barer the ground, the better! This species has a amazing range that includes almost all of North America, including the high Arctic down into Mexico, and at elevations from sea level up to 13,000 feet. So, look for them in open country with short to no vegetation.
