Soldiers Monument (in Antietam National Cemetery)

Commemorative monument erected to honor those who served and died during the Battle of Antietam on Sept 17, 1862. Expected to be the largest work of its kind in the country when completed. Statue cost $30,000.

Structure Number: 001B || Constructed of white granite from Westerly, RI. 22' square at base and 44'7" h from fndtn to top of statue.Statue itself is 21'6" h figure of soldier w/rifle.Base reads "NOT FOR THEMSELVES/BUT/FOR THEIR COUNTRY". Replace mortar. || Built between 1871 and 1873; sculpted by James W. Pollette. Shown at Philadelphia Centennial Expo in 1876; base created by Cemetery Association in 1879; monument installed and dedicated in 1880
