Frances (Appleton) Longfellow to Emmeline (Austin) Wadsworth, c. 1847-1851
Manuscript letter
Cambridge
Monday –
My dear Emmeline,
Daily, the past week, have I been hoping for good news of, if not from, you & am now becoming exceedingly impatient, but send my congratulations in advance in case something is on the road for me. What a pity Sam could not have had the pleasant tidings to bear away with him, - tho’ then perhaps it would have been harder for him to uproot himself from home. [p. 2] I only heard of his decision a few days before he sailed, & called to give him a farewell, but your smiling damsel – said he was not at home much to my disappointment, so I had to content myself with leaving my card. Now that he is fairly pushed off the nest he will doubtless fly far & pleasantly - & marvel he has waited so long for the refreshment & stir to mind & body foreign travel inevitably gives.
How pleasant for Mrs Murray too to get more direct news from home, & for him in that strange land to see her, & find a home. [p. 3] I heard from Mary on Saturday & she writes cheerfully as if all were well with them. Eva she said had “come out” as bridesmaid at the wedding of a gay widow at Antigua! the children had been remarkably well all summer, for which she may be very thankful.
Your last Boston news is the engagement of Marian Shaw & Fred Sears which seems to surprise every one, as he is thought not quite clever enough for so charming a damsel – but it seems a very pleasant family arrangement & I dont doubt will turn out well.
But I must not write much this time, nor until I know how you are.
ever yr loving
Fanny EL.
