Limber Pine on Blue Dragon Flow
a pine tree growing out of a crack in a dark lava rock with blueish surface
Some plants like limber pines can only grow where enough water collects, such as in a crack in a lava flow. Cracks in rocks also provide seedlings with shelter from harsh temperatures and wind.
