Three Cheyenne Chiefs Captured at the Battle of Washita , Taken at Camp [Fort] Supply, Indian Territory
LIBI_00019_00395; This item is an original albumen photograph of 3 Cheyenne Indian chiefs (Fat Bear, Big Head and Dull Knife) captured at the Battle of Washita. Dull Knife was not at the Battle of Washita. The photograph is 4 3/4 x 7" (8 x 9 7/8" mounted) and was produced circa 1869 by W. S. Soule. The image is believed to have been taken at Camp (Fort) Supply, Indian Territory. On the front, a notation in Captain Frederick Benteen's handwriting reads, "Fat Bear/Big Head/Dull Knife/Cheyenne prisoners captured by 7th Cav--Comd. by..." The remaining text has been cut off. On the verso, a handwritten notation in pencil reads, "Three chiefs Autie captured in the Washita Campaign" and is signed by Elizabeth B. Custer.Note: "Pkg 6 Box 3" handwritten on the verso.
