Frances (Appleton) Longfellow to Thomas Gold Appleton, 18 September 1841
Manuscript letter
East Bourne Sep 18th 1841.
Dear Tom, We took the liberty to open yr letter (which we should have sent on yesterday but overlooked it in the hurry of sending our last dispatches) thinking Father might say something therein more definite about my stay but as he evidently expects me back, I go. Mary has been thinking very seriously lately of going too but not being capable of a hasty decision prefers to run the chance of getting places in London at the last moment. The chief draw-back on her inclination for passing the winter at home is the fact that Robert would probably remain here to look about for some position. All this will amaze you [crossed out: but] as it did me for I knew not she had thought of returning till she announced that R had written to Mr Coffin to engage berths for her & Anne but he kept the letter thinking she might change her mind & by the letters we sent yesterday they will be left in suspense there till we arrive. We have carefully searched your room & every drawer here but discover no bank bills. I remember your putting them up after giving me one & I thought dep [torn off] them among your clothes. This is an awkward loss for you & I hope you w[torn off] trace them yet. We have missed your so much that we are quite resigned to quitting this coast on Monday & shall probably hall Herstmanceux en route. I have managed to mount alone to Beachy Head & am recommending Mary to be driven up to-day to see those grand views of sea & land & the chalk Campanile which I think well worth the trouble. Mr Hughes has civilly invited you & R. to dinner. It was rather absurd you should have to go twice to Liverpool & R fears you will not accomplish the pleasanter visits you contemplated. This weather is too fine for good fishing I should think but at the North it may be less brilliantly Autumnal & I hope you will pull out many a noble salmon under the teaching of yr experienced fellow Walton. Write us where to direct for we have not now the least certainty that this will reach you. [crossed out: I enclose Mr E] I suppose Dr Gray will soon become visible in London! Send yr next letter to 16 Gower St.
[p. 2 bottom] Mary continues pretty well altho’ suffering for a day or two with a touch of the Grippe. Ronald has been as rubicund as a boiled prawn with his rash but is throwing it off & proving himself a Weller ‘upon instinct’ by his vigorous use of a new whip - & fit teamster cries. I trust no finny giant will imitate the ‘little trout’ & pull poor Walton in, but remember such things have happened so dont risk [p. 2 top] yourself on treacherous banks in yr zeal to ‘deal destruction’ round the land. Good by – All send love & wishes for your success. Ever y raff Fan –
Robert begs me to say he would have written if I had not forestalled him & that he told Father you had not your letter that he might not be surprised at no[crossed out: ne] answer, but I suppose you did not forget to write at Liverpool.
