Salisbury, N. C. Sept. 1, 1927. Superintendent of the Gettysburg Battlefield, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. My dear Sir: I regret, in leaving Gettysburg, that I neglected to come and say Goodbye to you and thank you for your courtesies to me while in your office. I am still very much troubled about the location for the North Carolina Monument, and I desire to ask you a few questions, which will be strictly confidential, unless you think otherwise. My committee leans towards [the] Bloody Angle, the location now used as a corn field, about 100 yards perhaps from where the monument stands for General Armstead [sic]. If this plot would be at all objectionable to the authorities at Washington, of course I shall not press it. I am asking you if there is any way for me to find out before our next meeting how the authorities at Washington feel about it. My Senator here, Mr. Overman, has been to Washington twice to see the Secretary of War, but so far has not been able to get in touch with him. If you could straighten this matter out for me, it would help me a great deal in the final location of the monument. Since parting with you that morning and visiting the Lee Monument on West Confederate Avenue, the thought came to me that we ought to group our monuments in and around Lee on his horse, Traveler. These questions are all of great importance and are giving me considerable worry. If you can help me out in any way, I shall greatly appreciate it. I shall likely make one more visit to Gettysburg, in company with the Governor of North Carolina. With high esteem and kind regards, believe me Very truly yours, A. H. Boyden.
