Photo date unknown. Yuri Kochiyama fought for Latino, African American, Native American and Asian American civil rights and causes. She held weekly open houses for activists in her Harlem apartment. A famous quote of Ms. Kochiyama's, "I didn't wake up and decide to become an activist. But you couldn't help notice the inequalities, the injustices. It was all around you."
