Big Hole National Battlefield Site. The natural systems and resources of the area are critical for understanding the significance of the site. The natural landscape, including topography, vegetation, climate, and hydrology, influenced the selection of this area as an encampment, the battle events, and the ultimate escape of Nez Perce bands to the south. The site had long been used among native peoples as a summer hunting ground.
