Peleg Wadsworth to Lucia Wadsworth, 10 May 1794
Manuscript letter
Phila. 10thMay1794
5 OClock PM
My dear Lucia, You apologize For the Shortness of your Letters, I think they are of a very agre-able[sic] length, & very good Ones indeed, For a little Girl. I think you have improved very much in Letter writing; & if you have not Curiosities to write about, I see you have not forgot to pay a very handsome Compliment to your Parents as well as to your brothers & sisters. It is not always the length of a Letter that ren-ders it a good One, but the agreableness[sic] of the subject & the manner of treating it. In order to find out what will please those we write to, we should endeavour to change places with them in Imagination, & then ask ourselves what in that case we should like to be inform’d about & what would please us in their situation - & by this Rule if I was at Portland & you was here, I think that I should be very well pleas’d if you should write that you lov’d me very well. Adieu my Dear Lucia & be very assured that I am your affectionate Papa (p. 2) 13th. Yesterday my dear I receiv’d yours of the 3d May in-closed in Nancys, It was a very pretty Letter indeed & I am much pleas’d with it as well as with your improvement. I think the learning the Greek Letters will be no disadvantage to you, as it will not take up much of your time. And if Mr George will be pleas’d with it, & it will not harm ^you you may as well gratify him – I shall not be able to answer Cousin Nancy, this post.
