"6th day evening. My dear Brother Thy letter was recieved this morning we were glad to hear of thy safe arrival. We hope thee may like the school and are sure thee cannot help liking thy boarding place. I should not mind going away to school if it were in such a delightful place & society. It rained quite hard yesterday. We were all invited to [Nelly] Skaats party last night but did not go on account of the rain should love to have gone had it been pleasant – Father says thee had better study Book Keeping he thinks it very useful and all the useful and practical branches thee can attend to he says Burroughs will know what thee ought to study --- And thee had better buy a pair of slippers in Syracuse if thee can find them to suit thee. Little Willie has been quite sick since thee left he has not been to school since Fourth-day – he had a sore throat and fever is some what better to-night he says send a kiss to brother Richard and tell him to send me one in his next letter. Has cousin Libbie finished that piece she was painting I mean the fruit _______ Richard and Theodore Underhill returned last night I believe. Richard starts for his home in Philadelphia next Second-day – Tell cousin Lizzie that mother has not found the pocket handkerchief we made for thee yet and she wishes to know if thee thinks three shirts will be enough for thee until Christmas. Mother is making the same now and if thee can not get along without them she will try and find an opportunity to send them to thee. I have written thee quite a letter and I will close perhaps Sarah will write a few lines with much love to all I remain thy affectionate sister Mary" "Dear Brother As Mary has left a little room for me I will try to fill it although she has told about all the news. We like our new Teacher very much her name is Miss Densmore she has a gold cross for a medal and the one that has the most Credit marks for the week wears it – I think it is a very good plan. Lillias Gay wears it next week, thee must excuse the blot as it was an accident of mine, I hope thee will like it in Syracuse did thee get a seat in the school room or does thee study at Cousin Lizzie’s room. I have been doing sums this evening and dont feel much like writing so I guess I will close, and try to write a longer one next week, do write every week and if thee has time we would be very glad to hear from thee more than that. Mother and Father send their love to thee and Cousins Lizzie and Burroughs with much love to all I remain as ever thy affectionate Sister Sallie Seventh-day evening P.S. we have found thy Physiology does thee think thee will want it this term. Thee can get it when thee comes home Josiah Letchworth is at Uncle George’s I do not know how long he is going to stay – Sarah.”
