Director, Indiana Historical Bureau
State Library and Historical Building

Dear Mr. Hawkins:
Your recent request for information on Indiana monuments at Gettysburg as well as data on monument policy, has been delayed in order to provide you with photographs of several of the State monuments.
There are seven Indiana regimental monuments and a marker on the Gettysburg Battlefield, but no State monument. If you despite photographs of these, please let us know.
There are no specific limitations on monuments as such. The design of the monument, however, must be approved by the Director of the National Park Service. A drawing or model of the proposed monument should be submitted for approval before work progresses. We enclose a former regulation which still serves us as a guide for the erection of monuments.
We are also enclosing photographs of the Alabama, Arkansas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Florida, and Virginia monuments. Since the Arkansas monument was erected in 1966, its cost would probably be more pertinent to your needs. We understand that the Legislature appropriated $50,000 for its design, construction, erection, and dedication.
The enclosed map of the Gettysburg National Military Park shows the approximate sites of the present regimental monuments and markers. Since these areas have extensive developments, any proposed location will have to be studied at the site.
If we can be of any further assistance, please let us know.
Sincerely yours,
George F. Emery
Superintendent
