man standing by a roadside, covered in steam emerging from a culvert under the road
Hundreds of culverts exist below the Denali Park Road. They must be steamed open in spring, so that melt-water flows under the road, rather than across it. The road is mainly dirt and gravel, and can be damaged quickly by flowing water.
