It is recommended that representation of the battle flag depict the flag of the wd Mississippi Regiment that was captured at Gettysburg, or some other flag carried by Mississippi units at Gettysburg. There are very good archival and museum sources in Mississippi that should be consulted. Since battle flags represent the spirit, integrity, and character of military organizations, the flag should be representation of this State. It is also recommended that consideration be given to representing a flag-pole in lieu of the flag-staff with point, cord, and tassle [sic]. This, too, should be discussed with authorities in this field. 4. The inscription approved by the Mississippi Gettysburg Memorial Commission should be revised to eliminate: a. The word “righteous” in the first sentence – “On this ground our brave sires fought for their righteous cause –” or else we will have to revise American History. b. The word “here” in the second sentence – “Here, in glory, sleep those who gave to it their lives –“, because none of the Confederate dead are buried on the Gettysburg Battlefield.
