North wildfire, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, summer 2004
The North Fire was ignited by lightning on August 21, 2004, and was discovered the next day by a park fire engine crew stationed in nearby Cedar Grove. After three days of burning, the fire was showing potential to spread downslope toward the Cedar Grove development in the bottom of Kings Canyon, so containment action was taken along the west flank of fire to control that downslope movement. A total of four acres burned. These images, taken by SEKI Fire Monitoring Crew, show vegetation before, during and after the burn and views of sundown and moonrise over the Great Western Divide.
