Lava Trees

two impressions of the bases of standing trees left in lava rock next to a hiking stick of the same height and a third horizontal impression

Lava trees can be viewed along the Wilderness Trail and are created when living trees are enveloped by lava flows. The water inside the tree keeps it from burning long enough for a mold to be formed in the cooling lava.
