Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Commission. Philadelphia, Pa., October 5, 1909. Colonel John P. Nicholson, Chairman, Gettysburg National Park Commission, Philadelphia. My dear Colonel: The Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Commission, approved by the Secretary of War, provides for the names of all Pennsylvanians who fought in the battle of Gettysburg to be inscribed on bronze tablets around the memorial. I respectfully forward for approval the names of sixteen of the regiments, as follows: 29th Infantry, 30th Infantry, 39th Infantry, 40th Infantry, 41st Infantry, 49th Infantry, 56th Infantry, 57th Infantry, 71st Infantry, 90th Infantry, 98th Infantry, 105th Infantry, 109th Infantry, 114th Infantry, 148th Infantry In connection with this beg to state that these names have been car fully prepared and revised. Fortunately, all these regiments were mustered for pay the day before the battle, the same roll being used by the Paymaster to pay off the men some five or six weeks afterwards, official copies of the roll being furnished us by the Auditor for the War Department. Afterwards, committee of survivors of each regiment went over these rolls, corrected the spelling of the names and struck off the name of any man who deserted, etc. I think they are as correct as human foresight and efforts can make them. We now ask the approval of the Department as early as possible, so that we may proceed to have the names cast for the bronze tablets on our State memorial. Very truly yours, St. Clair A. Mulholland President, Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Commission
