Erica (Thorp) de Berry to Anne Allegra (Longfellow) Thorp, 27 February 1917
Manuscript letter
Pine Mt.
Feb. 27th.
(Grandpapa’s birthday.)
Darlingest. Mamma,
I couldn’t bear to hear from Papa of the horrid slow time you were having with your poor old ankle. I’d hoped it was only slight, and that you’d be up in a few days, or a week at the most, - but it’s horrid to be laid low for so long! Does it hurt much? I hope
[written cross on L margin and top]
I sent my suit back by express collect. I’m sorry but it left after I did. (p.2) the quiet time may give you a chance to get lots of things done, and to have nice chances to see people that don’t always [crossed out: come] ^work^ in the midst of all the busy jobs of normal life.
I’m enclosing a chandler bill, the first item only of which I know anything about. If you, or whosever it is, will pay the whole, I’ll repay you later. Also, I enclose a note from Mrs Clark which I’m sorry to bother you with. But I thought perhaps (p.3) you’d telephone to Mrs (Greeley) Smith and find out just how badly off they are as she’ll probably know. It may be that the boys have work, by this time, or that some arrangement has been made. If Mrs S. thinks they’re really in distress for coal, I’d be glad to help out thro’ you, for however much seems necessary, as I know Mrs Clark is very conscientious about it, and does try hard to save.
I’m so glad that you saw Dr Little. (p.4) She enjoyed it immensely, and said such nice things about you all.
When do you think you can come down – and just when is Tuk’s commencement?
I must fly to supper now – to my table of seven, in our beautiful banquet-hall of a dining-room—stained in browny-green – with long windows giving mountain views, and a mammoth, cheery fireplace to cast its glow over us at night!
A heartful of love
from your Bun.
