In 1938-9, five bronze busts were installed in the niches that surround the tomb's crypt. The five generals whose images were selected were the "...those most closely associated with General Grant's victorious campaigns." The work was commissioned to artists of the New Deal era program, the Works Progress Administration. Bust by William Mues, 1938.
