Japan (built 1867; steamer) coaling at Pacific Mail SS Co. pier, First Street, San Francisco, CA, circa 1868-1874
View includes side-wheel steamer JAPAN (launched 1867). Note on the enclosure says, "Copied by Swadley from an original probably by Carleton E. Watkins." Image reproduced in John Kemble's book, "San Francisco Bay: A Pictorial Maritime History," p. 160, with the caption:[CR] ""Here is the Pacific Mail steamer JAPAN coaling at the company's wharf at the foot of First Street, San Francisco, for the voyage to Yokohama and Hong Kong. She, with her sister-ships, GREAT REPUBLIC, CHINA and AMERICA, was 360 feet long and measured 4,352 tons gross. Notice the wide-flaring "guards" built out to enclose the paddle wheels; her hull was 50 feet wide, but on deck she measured 79 feet. JAPAN entered service in 1868 and burned at sea off the China coast six years later. Clark Collection. (Courtesy Peabody Museum.)"
