Oakland Long Wharf, circa 1905-1912
View includes ELFRIEDA (ship), MELVILLE DOLLAR (built 1903; steam schooner) and another unidentified ship. Note on the glass plate enclosure says, "Use film neg, B12.04011n". For more information, see Info. File. This image is reproduced in John Kemble's book, "San Francisco Bay: A Pictorial Maritime History," pg. 39 with the following caption:[CR] "Oakland Long Wharf served deep-water and coastwise vessels until 1918....After 1882, Oakland Long Wharf was used for freight traffic only while passengers came and went at the new Oakland Pier terminal at the end of Oakland Mole. Long Wharf was extended over the mud flats nearly to Goat Island (Yerba Buena Island) to permit the berthing of deep draft vessels. In this photograph, taken in about 1905, an English four-poster, light, and with the "Red Duster" flying from her gaff, prepares to take aboard cargo. Astern of her lies another steel sailing ship loading for the Cape Horn route. To the left of this pair is a four-masted schooner with a steam schooner hiding behind her. Farther to the left lie MELVILLE DOLLAR and one of the coastwise passenger and freight steamers of the Alaska Pacific Steamship Co. In the background is Yerba Buena Island."
