Image reproduced in John Kemble's book, "San Francisco Bay: A Pictorial Maritime History," p. 33, with the following caption: "The planked sidewalk was part of the place of business of a nineteenth century ship chandler....Andrew Crawford was a sailmaker in San Francisco in the 1850's, and the firm of A. Crawford & Co., ship chandlers and sail makers was doing business at 27 Market Street by 1864. This is probably the location shown in this photograph with its display of rope, cable, chain, blocks, anchors, dories, and a whaleboat. In 1892, Crawford was bought out by S.F. Weeks & Co., which subsequently became Weeks-Howe-Emerson Co. which was still doing business as ship chandlers in 1957."
