Newport News (built 1904; freighter; U.S. Navy) in the channel at Mare Island, CA, circa 1920
Port bow view. Ex ODENWALD. Correspondence from Charles M. Loring attached to the back of the print: "I am enclosing a copy of a photo of the USS NEWPORT NEWS, prior to the time she was acquired by the Alaska Packers and renamed the ARTIC for the files of the museum. ... You will note that the picture was taken in Mare Island Channel in about 1920. The Navy YMCA and either the BAY CITY or EL CAPATAIN [sic - CAPITAN?] are in the background. The cornerstone of the "Y" was laid by Teddy Roosevelt in 1904. The ferries were on the S.P.'s Vallejo Junction - Vallejo run." U.S.S. Newport News
