Gold Rush Fleet in San Francisco Harbor, CA, 1851
The left side of the so-called "Forest of Masts" panorama, taken early in 1851. Note on small negative enclosure says, "use A11.07781.01 nl". Image reproduced in John Kemble's book, "San Francisco Bay: A Pictorial Maritime History," pp. 12-13, with the following information:[CR] "By 1851, when the pictures forming this panorama were taken, over 800 ships were in Yerba Buena Cove. Wharves were being built into the bay and hulks of abandoned ships served as warehouses, hotels and prisons. The view looks east from approximately Portsmouth Plaza with Rincon Point at the right and Yerba Buena Island at the left.
