Falls of Clyde (built 1878; barge), interior view, at Ketchikan, Alaska, circa 1925-1928
Collection of Mrs. Mary Joseph, wife of Capt. John F. Joseph, and mother of Helen (5 weeks old at the time). Additional information included inside the negative enclosure:[CR][CR]-photocopy of an obituary for Capt. John F. Joseph: [CR]"Funeral services were held Wednesday at San Francisco for Capt. John Francis Joseph, 3838 S. Pacific ave., who died Monday in the Marine hospital there. Burial was in Mountain View cemetary.[CR]The veteran skipper, who had lived here for 16 years, and who had been master of transports on the Atlantic coast during the first World War, failed to survive a major operation. He had been ill for some time.[CR]Widely known on this as well as the Atlantic coast, Capt. Joseph had been employed by the Hammond Lumber Co., General Petroleum and other companies during his 40 years at sea. He was a native of San Francisco.[CR]The widow, Mary, and daughter, Helen, were at the bedside before he died. They returned here today. Besides the widow and daughter, Capt. Joseph leaves two sisters, Mrs. Charles Jantzen, San Francisco, and Mrs. Matt Harriman, Oakland. Capt. Joseph was a member of the Masters, Mates, and Pilots.[CR][CR]-photocopy: "While all this was going on, a lady a former Mrs. Joseph was looking for me, she had read about me somewheres and what I was going to do. Her husband was in charge of the ship from 1926 until 1928, he died of gangrene contracted after an operation. I called her up, and she had a very fine set of photos, she will give me also some of the negatives. The interiors are especially very nice. Her baby daughter made a trip in the "FALLS OF CLYDE" towing that is, from Ketchikan to Seattle, when the baby was 5 weeks old. The ship had no ballast and they had a very very rough trip of it. I asked her to write down her experiences for the benefit of the FALLS OF CLYDE and she will do it. One of the photos shows the Standard Compass still in place and I am sure that the steering compasses were still there, as they had a crew and they steered behind the tug. I believe those compasses are still in Ketchikan or may be Seattle taken away when they did not think it necessary to steer behind the tug and did away with the crew."
