Waikiki (built 1929; vessel type unidentified), 1932 Apr 20
Rum runner. Later the JEANIE (vessel type unidentified). Additional information included inside the print enclosure: photocopy of article. "Vallejo Berthed Vessel to Make Debut on Video.[CR]A Vallejo-berthed former rum runner of the Prohibition era may make the magic screen of television.[CR]Max Bartmess, of the B and M Film Co., of Napa, said he has taken pictures of the vessel - formerly the WAIKIKI and now the JEANIE - and plans to use them as part of the projected American Automobile Association video program planned for 1967.[CR]The boat, owned by Bill Ryan of Oakland, a writer, was built in 1929 by the C and H Sugar Co. in Hawaii and was used by bootleggers to run illegal booze in the early 30s. It was sunk in the bay in 1933 following strange circumstances in which authorities found a dead man aboard and one presumed missing.[CR]The boat was held for 20 years by port authorities and finally auctioned off in 1953. It was purchased recently by Ryan.[CR]The craft is 48 feet long and has twin Chrysler engines which generate 500 horsepower. 'She'll do 27 knots,' Ryan said. 'She's just about the fastest thing afloat in her class.'[CR]The craft is berthed at the city Marina.[CR]The segment about the JEANIE will be part of a projected TV program sponsored by the AAA.[CR]Bartmess has been commissioned by the AAA to do the photography work on the TV project."
