Two Brothers (ship, 3m) riding in the stream in Oakland Creek, CA, 1904
View includes a "forest" of masts in the background. Additional information included inside the print enclosure: [CR]"Like barren trees, the fleet of seasoned old State-of-Mainers that wintered in Oakland Creek looked forward to April. If they were fortunate enough to secure a charter from the Alaska Packers Association, April was usually the month that found them blossoming with sail once again outside the Golden Gate.[CR]In the early years of the century, the Alaska Packers owned comparatively few ships, and usually chartered at least half of its fleet from the laid up fleet in the Creek. Wooden downeasters predominated in the early years of the trade; only seven of the twenty-four square-riggers in the 1902 fleet were of iron or steel construction. In another decade the famous "Star" fleet was largely assembled, outnumbering the earlier wooden ships, and dominating the trade until the first steamer was bought by the company in 1925. The last two vessels to go north under sail, STAR OF ALASKA and STAR OF HOLLAND, made their final voyage in 1929. In all, the company had owned nineteen vessels with the "Star" prefix, all of iron or steel construction."
