Whalebone drying at the Pacific Steam Whaling Co. yard in the Potrero, San Francisco, CA, undated
View includes the ORCA (steam whaler) on the left and the J.D. PETERS (built 1875; bark, 3m) on the right. Image reproduced in John Kemble's book, "San Francisco Bay: A Pictorial Maritime History," p. 109, with the following information: "What appear to be palm fronds are actually pieces of whalebone as removed from the whale's jaw and put out to dry in the yard of the Pacific Steam Whaling Co. in the Potrero District of San Francisco. The San Francisco-built steam whaler ORCA appears in the background at the left and, at the right, the merchant bark J.D. PETERS is loading whale oil and bone to transport around the Horn to East Coast markets. Millen Griffith Collection."
