Tichenor's drydock, foot of Second Street, San Francisco, Calif., circa 1867-1869
Photo of a stereoview. Negative source: "Society of California Pioneers". Image reproduced in John Kemble's book, "San Francisco Bay: A Pictorial Maritime History," p. 90, with the following information included in the caption:[CR] "Building a ferry slip at the foot of Second Street, San Francisco.....Alongside the new slip is the double-ended ferry ALAMEDA, built in 1866 and the prototype of bay ferries for over a half century to come. At the shipyard in the foreground, a small steamer has been cut in two and is being lengthened.* Notice the steam box for shaping timbers near the camera on the right. A port-painted British ship discharges at the right, and beyond her lie two revenue cutters. Offshore, the razee frigate INDEPENDENCE lies moored as a schoolship. She was stationed at San Francisco in this capacity from 1867 to 1869, thus establishing the date of the picture. In the distance is Mission Rock, later covered by a huge freight terminal. (Courtesy Society of California Pioneers.)"[CR]*BRISK is Ralston's yacht being lengthened in the foreground by Domingo Marcucci.
